Decision to ban Israel firm’s vessels ‘clear signal’ from Malaysia, says Fahmi

The government spokesman says the decision is in line with the country’s stance on issues involving Israel.

Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said Putrajaya had been consistent in championing the plight of the people of Gaza.
PUTRAJAYA:
The government’s decision to prohibit vessels from an Israel-based shipping company from docking at any Malaysian port is a “clear signal” that the country does not recognise Israel, Fahmi Fadzil said.

The government spokesman said Malaysia would never collude with Tel Aviv, in line with the country’s stance on issues involving Israel.

“We have been consistent and committed in championing the plight of the people of Gaza,” he said at a press conference here.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the government’s decision to prohibit vessels from Haifa-based ZIM in response to “Israel’s massacres and atrocities against Palestinian citizens.”

Anwar said the transport ministry would take action by imposing a permanent ban on the company, effective immediately.

ZIM was granted approval to dock in Malaysia in 2005.

Anwar also said the government decided to prohibit ships displaying Israel’s flag from docking at the country’s ports. Vessels heading for Israel are also prohibited from loading cargo at Malaysia’s ports.

Both prohibitions would take effect immediately, he said.

On a related matter, Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said he was unsure about the number of ZIM-owned vessels that docked in the country, but was certain it would not have any impact on the shipping and port industry.

“I believe it’s not a significant number and the government will keep tabs on this from time to time.”
