PUTRAJAYA:
The communications ministry has agreed in principle to revamp the controversial community communications department (J-Kom), as proposed by an Umno leader.

Minister Fahmi Fadzil said plans to revamp the department, which falls under his purview, were in the pipeline even before Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi had called for an overhaul.

“There’s a need to streamline J-Kom’s roles to ensure they are in line with the Madani government’s aspirations.

“There’s a need to review it and I can more or less agree with (Puad’s) suggestion,” he told reporters here.

Puad had earlier today said the department needed to be revamped following claims by its deputy director of the “Dubai Move”, a scheme supposedly aimed at toppling the current government.

Previously, J-Kom was mired in controversy after an alleged recording of a lewd conversation featuring its then director-general Agus Yusoff and a staff member made the rounds on social media.

The purported recording went viral on social media just after Agus confirmed resigning from the top post in the department.

J-Kom was under the spotlight again recently after its deputy director-general Ismail Yusop claimed there was a move, dubbed the “Dubai Move”, to topple the government orchestrated by a group of prominent politicians.

Puad later described Ismail’s analysis as shallow and said there was no need to play up the issue. The Umno leader said it would be better for J-Kom to be overhauled, rebranded and for its leaders to be replaced.

In response, Fahmi said Ismail’s statement followed certain claims circulating in WhatsApp groups and “attributed to the J-Kom deputy director-general”.

“I see that there are certain aspects that need to be streamlined to make sure such issues do not recur,” he said.
