Johor floods worsen, 5-fold rise in evacuees

Some 3,322 people have been evacuated, with Pontian the latest district in Johor to experience floods.

The floods in Johor have worsened tonight, with a nearly five-fold increase in people forced to evacuate in a matter of hours compared to this evening.

State executive councillor Norlizah Noh said three schools in Johor Bahru will be closed from tomorrow because of the floods. The schools are SK Kampung Maju Jaya, ⁠SK Bukit Mutiara and SK Sungai Tiram.

The Johor disaster management committee said the number of flood victims has risen to 3,322, compared to merely 674 at 4pm today.

According to Bernama, the committee said Pontian is the latest district in the southern state to experience floods.

However, Kota Tinggi currently records the highest number of flood victims, with 1,638 people evacuated to 19 relief centres in the district.

Earlier, the National Disaster Management Agency said four districts in Johor were hit by floods as of 4pm, namely Kluang (103 victims), Kota Tinggi (513), Kulai (38) and Segamat (20).

The irrigation and drainage department had reported that rivers in six areas in Johor were found to be at dangerous levels with an increasing trend.

It was also reported that the floods in Pahang had worsened, forcing 315 victims from 75 families in Rompin and Pekan to seek shelter at eight relief centres.

The meteorological department said Pahang and Johor can expect continuous rain until tomorrow.

Meanwhile, residents in multiple housing areas and villages along Sungai Johor in Kota Tinggi have started evacuating their homes.
