Khairul Akmal Jasni, 40, made the plea in the sessions court here today after the charge was read to him before judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin.
He is accused of attempting to leak a document entitled “Q1 2024 Upstream Business Performance Operational & Financial” – obtained in the course of his duties as a business unit performance manager in Petronas – to Petros.
The offence was allegedly committed at B-6-10, Marc Service Residence, Jalan Pinang in Dang Wangi here on June 8 last year between 3.19pm and 3.21pm.
Khairul was charged under Section 203A(1) read with Section 511 of the Penal Code with attempting to disclose information obtained in the performance of his duties.
If convicted, he is liable to a minimum fine of RM1 million, imprisonment of up to a year, or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Sabri Othman prosecuted while Khairul was represented by lawyer Fadhli Sutris.
Sabri proposed bail of RM50,000 with one surety.
In reply, Fadhli requested that bail be set at a minimal amount, saying his client had cooperated fully with the authorities since being summoned by the police in December last year.
“He held a high position in Petronas. He wants to answer the allegations and clear his name. There is no reason for him to run away,” he said.
The court allowed bail of RM20,000 with one surety with the additional condition that Khairul surrender his passport.
The case has been set for further mention on May 19.
