SHAH ALAM:
A housewife was charged in the sessions court here today over offensive comments about Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, posted on social media earlier this year.

Suhaila Abd Halim, 38, pleaded not guilty to the improper use of network facilities.

The mother of six is said to have used a Facebook account named “Suhaila Halim” to post remarks about the king at Sungai Buloh Hospital around 8.30am on Jan 4.

The charge was framed under Section 233(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which now provides for a maximum RM500,000 fine and up to two years in prison, upon conviction, following an amendment to the law which came into effect on Feb 11.

Since the offence of which Suhaila is accused is said to have occurred before that, she faces a fine of up to RM50,000, a maximum one-year jail term, or both, if convicted.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission prosecuting officer Azmir Razali proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety.

However, Suhaila, who was unrepresented, suggested bail of RM500, saying she was not working and was financially dependent on her husband.

Judge Norazlin Othman ordered her to post bail of RM10,000 and report to the nearest police station once a month pending the outcome of her case.

Suhaila was remanded after failing to post bail.

Case mention was fixed for Sept 17, for Suhaila to engage legal counsel and for the prosecution to hand over documents to the defence.
