PETALING JAYA: A welfare assistant at a children’s shelter has been charged in the Kangar sessions court with nine counts of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old at the shelter.
The accused, a 40-year-old from Ipoh, Perak, claimed trial after the charges were read before judge Sharifah Norazlita Syed Salim Idid, Harian Metro reported.
He was charged with sexually assaulting the girl at the staircase and office of the shelter’s quarters on nine occasions in November and December 2024.
The charges were framed under Sections 14(a) and (b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, which provides for up to 20 years in prison and a whipping, upon conviction.
The court fixed bail at RM15,000, which the accused was able to pay. It set Oct 9 for case mention.
