The department said the injured student was found lying below Block A of SMK Taman Ria Jaya shortly after an assembly.
“Initial investigations found no elements of bullying or crime as no other students or staff were at the upper floor of the block at the time. All were at the assembly area.
“However, further investigations are being carried out to determine the actual cause,” it was quoted by Berita Harian as saying.
The department also said based on preliminary checks of CCTV footage, the student is believed to have fallen from the third floor of the school building.
The student, who sustained injuries, including a broken arm, was sent to the hospital for further treatment. The student’s parents were immediately notified by the school.
The department also said it took the matter seriously and would cooperate fully with police.
“The department will not compromise on any elements of bullying or crime in schools, should any be found,” it said.
Separately, Bernama reported Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah as saying that the incident is believed to be linked to the victim being reprimanded by a teacher for bringing a mobile phone to school.
He said the victim, who has hearing impairment and autism, had previously been referred to the school’s guidance and counselling services.
“The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but initial investigations found that on Feb 26, the victim was reprimanded by a teacher for bringing a smartphone to school. However, the phone was not confiscated,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Muda police headquarters here.
He said the police interviewed the teacher involved, as well as several other teachers, and would record statements from other witnesses to ensure a transparent investigation.
He said the victim had been at the school since Form 1 and was reported to have frequent tantrums and difficulty accepting reprimands.
Adzli added that police had visited the victim at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital and were informed by doctors that although the student sustained serious injuries, including fractures to the left arm, left collarbone and hip as well as injury to the left lung, his overall condition remained stable.
“The injuries sustained are consistent with a fall. There were no head injuries and no other injuries that could be linked to bullying,” he said, adding that further investigations are being conducted.
