GEORGE TOWN:
A forest fire that broke out on a hill behind the Surin Residence condominum in Tanjung Bungah was brought under control after four hours today.

Penang fire and rescue department said the fire was in a forest area estimated to cover 12,141 sq m and located about 2km from the foot of the hill and not accessible to vehicles.

Firefighters had to hike to the fire spot while carrying their equipment, Penang fire and rescue official John Sagun Francis said.

They used the “fire beater” method and built a fire break to prevent it from spreading. The fire was brought under control shortly after 7pm, four hours after an emergency call was made, with firefighters continuing to work through the night.

No casualties had been reported.
