PETALING JAYA:
Police have arrested three suspects over a fire involving a firecracker and a fireworks stall at Taman Pekaka in Nibong Tebal, Penang, yesterday.

Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Jay January Siowou said that two men and one woman were remanded for three days from today until Wednesday to assist in investigations under Section 286 of the Penal Code for negligent conduct involving explosive substances.

“Initial investigations found that the stall had a valid permit. The incident damaged a motorcycle, two cars and nearby premises, including a restaurant and a house.

“No casualties were reported,” he said in a statement.

Siowou also urged the public to exercise caution and follow safety rules when handling flammable materials, particularly during the festive season, to prevent similar incidents.

A 15-second video of the incident has gone viral, showing sparks and fireworks flying into a nearby restaurant as its workers scrambled to pull down the shutters.

The stall’s permit has since been revoked by the Seberang Perai City Council.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested to assist in investigations into a firecracker explosion in Pendang, Kedah, last Friday that injured seven people.

Pendang police chief Rodzi Abu Hassan said the 21-year-old suspect was detained at about 10am today.

“The suspect confessed that he was playing with a ‘mercun bola’ along with six relatives when the firecracker became lodged in the plastic bag containing similar firecrackers, causing it to explode.

“Six victims, aged 11 to 20, who were near the scene, were injured in the explosion. All victims, including the suspect, suffered injuries to their faces and bodies and received outpatient treatment at Pendang Hospital,” he said in a statement today.
