KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his appreciation to Iran for allowing Malaysian oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Anwar said he conveyed the country’s appreciation to Iran during a meeting with Iran’s ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi on the sidelines of the Kuala Lumpur-Ankara Dialogue 2026 today.

“This step is crucial in ensuring the continuity of energy supply while helping to ease cost-of-living pressures and support the country’s economic stability,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.

Earlier today, Valiollah said six more Malaysian vessels currently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz would be allowed to pass through the waterway in stages.

The foreign ministry has confirmed that one of the seven Malaysian vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz had been granted safe passage and was now continuing its journey to its final destination.

This follows high-level diplomatic engagement between Anwar and Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian on March 26, enabling Malaysia to secure permission for the seven vessels to resume their journeys.

Iran has virtually closed the key waterway for oil and gas since US and Israeli strikes on the country began on Feb 28.

The disruptions have led to fuel shortages and sent oil prices soaring, causing wider economic consequences.

Iran has allowed passage through the Strait of Hormuz to vessels from “non-hostile” nations.
