PETALING JAYA:
A part-time imam at a surau in Shah Alam has been fined RM8,000 after pleading guilty to recording a video of his cousin showering on the fourth day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The Kota Bharu magistrates’ court ordered for the 36-year-old to be jailed 12 months if he failed to pay the fine, Utusan Malaysia reported.

The convict paid the fine.

He was charged with outraging the 27-year-old victim’s modesty by recording the video with his handphone at a house in Kok Lanas, Ketereh, around 6.30pm on March 24.

The charge was framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code which provides for up to five years in jail, a fine or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nadzir Abdullah urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence, saying the victim was the man’s cousin and the offence had taken place at their grandmother’s home amid the Aidilfitri festivities.

Lawyer Najwa Fahima Fadzil from the National Legal Aid Foundation asked the court to impose a minimal fine, saying her client had learned his lesson.

Najwa also said the man has a wife and two children, one of whom is aged five with heart issues. He also has to care for his mother who suffers from diabetes, she added.
