Corporal Khairul Azhar Abbi Paisa, 25, said he saw that Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar was hacked on the face, mouth and ear, while Syafiq Ahmad Said was shot in the head, Kosmo reported.
Both died in the incident.
Khairul said he and another corporal, Hasif Roslan, were patrolling the Ulu Tiram area near the police station at about 2.30am on May 17, 2024 when they received instructions from the officer-in-charge (OCS) to return to the station.
“Upon arriving in front of the station and getting out of the vehicle, I heard Lance Corporal Aznel Mat Salleh shouting for us to retreat and telling us that Azza had been hacked.
“I saw Azza lying between the barracks and the station building, covered in blood with slash wounds across his face from ear to mouth,” he said during examination-in-chief at the trial of the five over the attack that claimed the lives of two police officers.
Khairul said Aznel told him and Syafiq to move to the back of the station to look for the suspect, but the attacker opened fire at them.
“We ran back and regrouped behind the OCS’s office before Aznel went out to seek help, while Hasif, Syafiq and I moved to the front of the station near the armoured vehicle for cover.
“We tried to look towards the back of the station and saw the same man firing at us while we were taking cover behind the armoured vehicle.
“Hasif then stepped out towards the station gate to draw the attacker’s attention,” he said.
However, while they were in front of the armoured vehicle, Syafiq was shot in the head.
The suspect then attempted to seize the victim’s Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun, which is capable of automatic fire.
Khairul said the suspect failed to take the weapon from Syafiq’s body, and at that point, he managed to fire one shot at the suspect and attempted a second shot as the suspect moved.
“However, my pistol jammed and I moved behind the armoured vehicle’s tyre. After fixing the weapon, I fired another shot at the suspect’s body while seeking cover.
“At that moment, the suspect was lying next to Syafiq by the front tyre of the armoured vehicle,” he said.
He said a special forces unit arrived at about 3.30am, after which the situation at the station was brought under control.
He was later asked to identify the bodies of his two colleagues and the suspect.
The prosecution is led by deputy public prosecutor Mustaffa P Kunyalam, while the accused – five family members of the attacker – are represented by lawyers Faizal Rahman and Fatimah Zulaikha Ahmad Bashri.
