PETALING JAYA:
A 42-year-old widower in Perak has been sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography.

Ipoh sessions court judge Jean Sharmila Jesudason ordered Idham Rhusla Shahuri to begin serving his sentence from the date of his arrest on April 6, Berita Harian reported.

She also ordered him to undergo counselling throughout his time in prison.

Idham was charged with possessing a child porn video on his handphone at a house in Kampung Sadang, Perak Tengah, around 12.51pm on Monday.

The charge was framed under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which provides for up to five years in prison, a maximum RM10,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

According to the case facts, police raided Idham’s home and found a child porn video on his phone. The video had been downloaded from a Telegram group.

The cops also found other pornographic videos on his phone that did not involve children.

During sentencing, Idham’s lawyer M Kathan from the National Legal Aid Foundation pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying his client only earned RM1,800 a month and has two children under his care – one who has completed SPM and another still in Form 4.

Kathan said Idham also had to look after his 77-year-old father, and that this was his first offence.

Deputy public prosecutor Nor Arfahanim Azureen Arfanuddin sought a commensurate sentence, saying it must serve as a deterrent against the possession of child porn.

After proceedings, Nor Arfahanim told reporters that Idham would be charged with other offences at the Parit magistrates’ court.
