PETALING JAYA:
A 31-year-old unemployed man has pleaded guilty at the Seremban sessions court to possessing 209 child pornography videos on his mobile phone.

Judge Surita Budin sentenced Tengku Muqriz Shah Tengku Shahdizan to seven days in jail and a RM5,000 fine, or a further five months in prison in default.

Tengku Muqriz paid the fine and was ordered to start serving his sentence from the date of his arrest on April 7, Berita Harian reported.

He was charged with possessing 209 child porn videos on his phone at Jalan Merpati 2, Kampung Serting Ulu in Jempol on April 7.

The charge under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act is punishable by up to five years in prison, a maximum fine of RM10,000 or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni asked the court to impose a deterrent sentence as Tengku Muqriz’s offence involved the sexual abuse of children.

During mitigation, Tengku Muqriz said he did not have a job and was previously employed only as a member of the housekeeping staff at a hotel in Johor Bharu.

Tengku Muqriz added that this was his first offence and claimed he did not know that possession of child porn was a serious offence.
