14 students charged with rioting outside school in Skudai

Six of the students pleaded guilty while the rest claimed trial to charges of rioting under Section 147 of the Penal Code.

PETALING JAYA:
Fourteen students have been charged in the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court in connection with a riot that broke out outside a secondary school in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, on April 10.

According to Utusan Malaysia, six of the students, aged between 12 and 16 years, pleaded guilty after the charges were read out to them before magistrate Nabilah Nizam.

The remaining eight students, aged 15 to 17, claimed trial.

Based on the charge sheets, the students were accused of rioting in front of SMK Taman Selesa Jaya on Jalan Silat Lincah in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, at about 12.45pm, last Friday.

The charges were framed under Section 147 of the Penal Code, punishable with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The court fixed April 29 for document submission, sentencing orders for the six who pleaded guilty, and appointment of counsel for the eight who claimed trial.

All fourteen accused were released on bail of RM800 each with one surety.

In the same court, a 36-year-old woman, R Loganayagi, pleaded not guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a 17-year-old student at about noon on the same day and at the same location.

She was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of up to one year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

The court set bail at RM2,000 with one surety and fixed April 28 for mention.

In a separate court, S Lakhsmy pleaded not guilty before magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab to a similar charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a 17-year-old student at about 12.10pm on the same day and at the same location, also under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

Bail was set at RM2,000 with one surety, and the court fixed May 14 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Anis Shafeeqah Shariffudin handled the prosecution for all the cases.
