Transport minister Loke Siew Fook also said the discount would apply to the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran service on the JB Sentral–Tumpat–JB Sentral route.
Loke said the initiative aims to encourage the public to use rail services.
“Passengers must purchase tickets using a promotional code to be announced by KTMB between April 15 and 30, for travel from April 15 to Oct 14,” he said at a press conference here.
Loke also said KTMB would introduce two new monthly travel passes offering discounts of up to 90% – the MyPutrajaya Monthly Travel Card for civil servants working or residing in Putrajaya, and the MyKLIA Monthly Travel Card for Malaysians employed at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2.
He added that the government would maintain the current RM50 rate for the Pas My50 initiative, which offers unlimited bus and rail rides for 30 days in the Klang Valley.
“Currently, only 40% of public transport passengers utilise the pass.”
Separately, Loke said the government was implementing mitigation measures to reduce the financial burden on the airline industry following a surge in cancellations of international flights, especially to the Middle East.
He said the situation had become critical following the cancellation of 75% of scheduled flights on March 1.
“If this prolongs, it could result in economic output losses of between RM15 billion and RM150 billion over the course of 2026, stemming from a drop in confidence among tourists.”
He added that the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia had extended the credit period for fee and charge payments to 60 days.
It will also offer a RM50 travel rebate for one month for journeys to Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan. This is to help offset the surcharge rate for passengers.
Loke said the rebate is expected to benefit some 100,000 passengers travelling between May 15 and June 14.
On a separate matter, Loke said he was disappointed with the “almost weekly” disruptions to LRT and MRT services.
He said Prasarana Malaysia Bhd had been instructed to pay close attention to technical issues to ensure reliable train services.
“We want to encourage people to use public transport, so train services must be reliable.”
