Ravinthran, Azmi to be elevated as Federal Court judges

Six High Court judges are expected to be appointed to the Court of Appeal, and six others appointed to the High Court.

Two Court of Appeal judges are set to be elevated to the Federal Court, with their promotions ensuring that all 11 positions in the apex court are filled for the first time, sources said.

Ravinthran Paramaguru and Azmi Ariffin are among 14 judges who will receive their letters of appointment from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara tomorrow.

Six High Court judges are slated to move up to the Court of Appeal. They are Justices Dean Wayne Daly, Aliza Sulaiman, Amarjeet Singh Serjit Singh, Radzi Harun, Latifah Tahar and Ahmad Shahrir Salleh.

Six others, judicial commissioners appointed in 2023, will be confirmed as High Court judges: Suzana Said, Yusrin Faidz Yusoff, Arziah Apandi, Gan Techiong, Hazizah Kassim, and Suriyati Hasimah Hashim.

Ravintharan was appointed judicial commissioner on Jan 5, 2009, before being elevated to the High Court in 2013 and later the Court of Appeal in 2019.

Azmi was appointed judicial commissioner in 2014 and elevated to the High Court in 2017. He was promoted to the Court of Appeal in June 2023.

Ravintharan and Azmi are expected to take their oath of office before Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh in the afternoon. The Court of Appeal judges will be sworn in before Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais, while the High Court judges will take their oaths before Chief Judge of Malaya Hashim Hamzah.

Under the Federal Constitution, judicial appointments are made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the prime minister and in consultation with the Conference of Rulers.

Candidates are first proposed by the nine-member Judicial Appointments Commission, chaired by the chief justice.
