“Raya festivities are over, it is now time to speak up,” the former economy minister said in a Facebook post today.
The #TangkapAzamBaki secretariat will hold a second protest at Dataran Merdeka on Saturday to press for a “full investigation” into allegations concerning Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki’s alleged shareholding.
It will also push for an investigation into the alleged manipulation of corporate takeovers involving MACC.
On Feb 15, more than 150 protesters marched from the Sogo shopping mall to Dataran Merdeka calling for Azam’s resignation following a Bloomberg report that he held 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Bhd.
Rafizi, who attended the rally, warned the government of more protests if no action was taken against Azam following his latest shareholding controversy.
Azam is alleged to have breached a 2024 government circular limiting civil servants’ shareholdings in Malaysian-incorporated companies to no more than 5% of paid-up capital or RM100,000 in value, whichever is lower.
He has denied the allegations, saying he had declared the transaction and the shares had been disposed of last year.
He has since sued Bloomberg for defamation over the shareholding report, seeking RM100 million in general damages.
