KUALA LUMPUR:
An e-hailing driver was jailed for one month and fined RM300 by the magistrates’ court today after pleading guilty to stealing household and personal care items worth RM402 from a supermarket last week.

Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan also ordered Rashid Noh, 44, to serve an additional seven days in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Rashid pleaded guilty to stealing 20 items, including flour, sardines, coffee, dishwashing liquid, body wash, deodorant, and toothpaste, from an Aeon supermarket in Taman Maluri, Cheras, at about 8pm on April 18.

The charge was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Syarifah Syifa Syed Baharom urged the court to impose a sentence proportionate to the offence, citing the losses incurred.

Defence counsel M Soosai Raj, however, appealed for leniency, saying the accused earned about RM2,500 a month and supported two primary school-going children.
