DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong said the wing supports the rally’s demand for a royal commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of a so-called “corporate mafia” involving the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
In a statement, Woo said DAP Youth also backed the demands for a holistic probe into the shareholding allegations levelled against Azam, as well as for MACC to be reformed comprehensively.
“The series of allegations faced by MACC is not merely about whether certain people have received undue benefits but the credibility and transparency of the national anti-corruption system.
“Although Azam’s tenure is nearing its end and the government is expected to appoint a new MACC chief, this does not mean the controversies should be ignored.
“On the contrary, the authorities must carry out a comprehensive, independent and transparent investigation into all allegations to uncover the truth and rebuild public confidence,” Woo, a Perak executive councillor, said.
Woo added that DAP Youth would “stand with the people” to peacefully demand accountability and reforms.
Azam’s current contract expires on May 12. His tenure had been extended three times since he took office in March 2020, with one-year extensions granted in May 2023, May 2024 and May 2025.
The rally organised by several civil society and student groups will be joined by PKR MPs Rafizi Ramli and Wong Chen, as well as former PKR vice-president Tian Chua.
Woo also called out Perikatan Nasional for apparently not taking a stand on the allegations against MACC, accusing the coalition of neglecting its responsibility of serving as an effective and responsible opposition.
“It only proves that PN is indeed the worst and most ineffective opposition in Malaysia’s history,” he said.
