Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said the target was set following further scrutiny of recommendations that had been agreed upon previously.
“The committee aims to finalise this bill in the near future before a report containing the proposed amendments is submitted by the final meeting scheduled for May 18,” she said in a statement.
She said the committee’s fifth meeting, which she chaired today, focussed on the drafting of the bill.
During today’s meeting, the committee heard a presentation from the Attorney-General’s Chambers regarding the new draft bill, which was formulated based on recent recommendations.
Azalina maintained the government is committed to ensuring that the process of separating the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor is carried out meticulously and in accordance with the constitution.
The meeting was also attended by MPs Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong), William Leong (PH-Selayang), Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi), Roy Angau Gingkoi (GPS-Lubok Antu), Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor), Lo Su Fui (GRS-Tawau), and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar).
Adly Zahari (PH-Alor Gajah), Hamzah Zainudin (Independent-Larut), Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), and Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) were unable to attend due to unavoidable circumstances.
