PETALING JAYA:
A man was sentenced to three months in jail and fined RM5,000 by the Bandar Baru Bangi sessions court today after pleading guilty to insulting Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim on social media in September.

Hafiz Haron, 42, entered his plea after the charge was read out to him by an interpreter before judge Firdaus Md Isa, Harian Metro reported.

Firdaus also ordered Hafiz to serve an additional four months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Hafiz was accused of knowingly making and posting a comment that was grossly offensive towards the king.

The offence was committed at about 7.30am on Sept 11, 2025, via the TikTok account @muhammad.bin.abdu969.

The charge was framed under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, as well as an additional fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Atiqah Mohamad Alias urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a deterrent.

Hafiz, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency, saying he is the family’s breadwinner, working in his village to support his wife and three children, while also caring for his ailing mother.
