16 dead so far after boat with Indonesian migrants capsizes

The death toll from a boat capsize off Pangkor island involving Indonesian migrants has risen to 16 with four more bodies found today.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the bodies of three men were discovered southwest of Pulau Buloh and a fourth body, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was found southwest of Pulau Sangga Kechil.

A total of 23 victims have been rescued so far.

The search and rescue operation will continue tomorrow, the seventh day of the operation. “If no more bodies are found, the operation may be called off,” said Perak MMEA director Shukri Khotob.

The boat believed to be carrying Indonesian migrants was reported to have sunk about 8.2 nautical miles from Pulau Pangkor on May 11.
