Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the investigation was being conducted by the classified criminal investigation unit.
“The investigation is being carried out under the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting a person with intent to provoke a breach of the peace,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Kumar said the probe was also being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
He reminded the public to be more careful when posting content on social media, particularly on matters involving race, religion and royalty.
Yesterday, the Johor royal press office urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take firm action after a fake TikTok account was found to have posted defamatory and insulting content targeting the king.
The office said the fake account, using the username ‘Sultan Ibrahim Ismail’, posted images of the king alongside false claims that he “enjoys eating pork”.
The account had allegedly posted another image depicting Sultan Ibrahim’s face superimposed onto the body of an animal, which the royal press office described as ‘clearly insulting and deeply irresponsible’.
MCMC later issued a statutory demand to TikTok for failing to moderate offensive and defamatory content, particularly involving the royal institution.
It said TikTok’s moderation of such content remained unsatisfactory despite several notifications and engagements about the issue, particularly in immediately removing such content and preventing their further dissemination.
The statutory demand called on TikTok to take immediate remedial measures and provide a formal explanation regarding its moderation failures.
