Judge Suzana Hussin allowed the defence’s acquittal application after prosecuting officer A Selvam informed the court that Nur Fazreen Kamal, 45, was offered a compound under Section 92 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
During case management, Selvam said MACC accepted her representation on May 7 and a compound was paid on May 12, though the amount was not disclosed.
“Therefore, the prosecution is seeking to withdraw the principal charge under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and the alternative charge under Section 165 of the Penal Code,” he said.
Defence counsel T Sivaranjeni then applied for a full acquittal on the basis that the compound had been paid.
Fazreen, who previously headed the corporate communications unit at the natural resources, environment and climate change ministry, was charged on Aug 27 last year.
She was accused of receiving RM5,268 from a representative of Tulip Event Exhibition Enterprise via bank transfer on May 11, 2023.
The payment was allegedly a reward for helping the company obtain approval for equipment rental worth RM49,950 for the Trenchless Asia 2023 exhibition at KLCC.
The alternative charge alleged that she received the money knowing it was paid in connection with her official duties.
