KUALA LUMPUR:
Haslini Abdul Rahman began making chocolate breadsticks in 2001, selling them during the festive Raya season. But, when the pandemic hit and lockdowns were imposed two years ago, she took matters into her own hands by selling these sweet treats to help support her family.

In January, the 33-year-old housewife officially launched Chocoloka Breadstick as a full-time venture.

Even though she began making it two decades ago – “I was craving a chocolate snack, found the recipe online, and decided to try it” – Haslini continues to make changes to the recipe, improving on taste and quality to give her customers the best.

A crunchy breadstick coated in a mixture of milk and dark chocolates, topped with a beloved Malaysian cereal… it’s the kind of snack where one bottle will not be enough.

“We decided to mix two types of chocolate as we did not want it to be too sweet, especially for those who are older or may have health issues,” she explained.

Presently, Haslini makes the breadsticks at home. “My oven is quite small and it does take me a little longer to fulfill orders, but I do my best to complete all of them on time,” she told FMT.

She begins by cutting the bread and toasting it, then melting the chocolate and coating each breadstick individually before adding on a layer of Nestum.

And she does it all from start to finish, from taking note of the orders, making them from scratch, packing them in bottles, sealing each container, and wrapping and packing each order.

Still, she points out that she would not be able to run the business without the love and support of her husband.

“Whenever he is not busy with work, he helps to make and pack orders, and even films all the content for our Instagram page,” she said warmly.

The hardworking mother of one wakes up at 6am every day to start work. Alone, she completes up to 20 bottles by 2pm, including making the treats, sealing and packing them.

If her husband is able to help, they can achieve twice that number.

There have been months where orders have been slow, but they usually pick up during the festive periods, and Haslini is extremely grateful to her loyal customers who have supported her throughout the years.

“When it comes to Raya, we sometimes have so many orders to complete that I will be in the kitchen the whole day,” she laughed.

Haslini has big dreams for Chocoloka Breadstick in the years to come: “This may take a few years, but I hope to one day be able to open a factory to make our chocolate breadsticks.”

And while she currently only takes orders via Shopee, she hopes to expand to other platforms in the future.

But even before that, Haslini shares a smaller goal: to be able to invest in a bigger oven so she can fulfill more orders at one go. She is also looking for people to be part of the “Chocolokarian” team to help distribute the products.

At the end of the day, although it can get exhausting, Haslini said it is her customers who keep her going.

“When I get their feedback and see their happy faces enjoying the chocolate breadsticks, it motivates me to persevere,” she said happily.

Each 300g bottle of chocolate breadsticks is priced at RM23 and can last for up to six months. Head on over to Shopee to order this delicious snack.
