HYDERABAD:
India has repatriated more than 2,400 nationals trafficked to cyber scam centres in Myanmar over the past 18 months, while efforts continue to bring home about 150 others still trapped in the country’s cybercrime compounds.

India’s foreign ministry secretary Vikram Misri said authorities are working closely with the Myanmar government to secure their safe return.

“We are in touch with the Myanmar government to repatriate the remaining people as well,” he said during a media briefing in New Delhi.

Indian nationals are usually trafficked to work in these places via a third country and that underlines the need for “greater regional cooperation” to tackle the problem, Misri said.

Crime syndicates often lure Indian citizens with fake job offers to work in fraudulent operations.

Thousands of Indians, including software engineers, have been rescued from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, the external affairs ministry told Parliament in December.
