Anwar had arrived at the palace at 10.25am. He left at 11.30am, accompanied by shouts of “Reformasi” from supporters gathered near the palace gates, without speaking to the media.

His audience with Sultan Abdullah was initially postponed after the King was admitted to the National Heart Institute for treatment.

Anwar claimed last month he had a “formidable” majority from MPs to oust the Perikatan Nasional government led by Muhyiddin Yassin.

He is said to have a list of 121 MPs who support his bid to be the prime minister.

However, he has not revealed the actual number backing him, saying he would only do so after his audience with the King.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had advised party members to avoid gatherings, especially along major roads leading to Istana Negara, in anticipation of Anwar’s audience with Sultan Abdullah today.

He also called on the people to remain calm if the audience leads to other political developments.
