Belgium-based Melexis opens €70mil wafer testing site in Kuching

The microelectronics company says this is its largest global wafer testing site, supporting semiconductor demand.

Belgium-based global microelectronics engineering company, Melexis has opened its largest worldwide wafer testing site in Kuching, Sarawak.

The company said the expansion signifies its commitment to meeting the increasing demand for semiconductors which is expected to double in the next decade worldwide, and strengthening its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

In a joint statement with the investment, trade and industry ministry (Miti) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida), Melexis CEO Marc Biron said with an investment of 70 million euros (RM356.18 million), the wafer testing site underscores Melexis’s ambition and will ensure future growth.

“We are at the forefront of innovation and this opening will support us in the markets that we serve,” he added.

Meanwhile, Miti minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the opening of Melexis’s largest global wafer testing facility in Sarawak showcases Malaysia’s effective handling of investment projects, reinforcing its global position in the semiconductor supply chain.

“As Melexis helps drive Malaysia’s technological advancement, it will also create a significant socio-economic spillover that will benefit the surrounding businesses and communities, contributing to more inclusive and broad-based growth outlined in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030,” he said.

Echoing these sentiments, Mida CEO Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Majid said Melexis’s newest facility is a testament to Malaysia’s favourable value propositions for quality investments while underscoring the government’s role in ensuring seamless support and collaboration with international investors.

“By providing comprehensive assistance, we aim to create a conducive environment for technological growth and support sustainability.

“This includes facilitating access to necessary resources and streamlining administrative processes that align with our national vision,” he said.

He said Miti would facilitate Melexis’s integration into the ecosystem, ensuring they receive the necessary support to thrive and contribute significantly to the local technological landscape.
