PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia’s professional mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai captured the 2024 Malaysia Masters badminton title by defeating Indonesians Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari 21-18, 21-19.

The win by the world No. 18 pair in this BWF World Tour Super 500 at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil is their second title of the year following their victory at the Swiss Open in March.

Soon Huat and Shevon, who got married earlier this month, take home the prize money of US$33,180 (RM156,361) and add 9,200 BWF points to their tally for the year.

The Indonesians, seeded third in the tournament, received US$15,690 (RM73,940) and 7,800 points as runners-up.

With this win, the fourth-seeded Malaysians have beaten the world No. 15 pair in six out of their seven meetings so far.

The Malaysian duo had an impressive run in the tournament beating South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Eom Hye, Taiwan’s Yang Po Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang, and Indonesians Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto-Lisa Ayu Kusumawati before defeating top seeds and compatriots Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei in the semi-final yesterday.

In the final, the Malaysians appeared all fired up with the partisan crowd cheering them on throughout the match.

Soon Huat-Shevon took an early 7-5 lead in five minutes. However, the gritty Indonesians led 11-8 at the break. But the Malaysians quickly recovered to take the first game 21-18 in 19 minutes.

A jittery start by the local pair in the second game saw the Indonesians take a 9-5 lead in six minutes. However, with the full support from the crowd, Soon Huat-Shevon fought back and eventually won the game 21-19 in 29 minutes to win the match.
