The top-seeded Malaysian pair, ranked world No 4, overcame the world No 26 Indonesians 21-17, 10-21, 21-15 in 54 minutes. The win avenged their defeat by the same pair at the Malaysia Open in January.
Although Pearly and Thinaah took the opening game comfortably, they were forced to regroup after dropping the second game. They regained control in the decider to seal their spot in the last eight.
Several other Malaysian pairs are also in action in the second round, including women’s doubles duo Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xin and men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai, and Yap Roy King-Junaidi Arif.
In the men’s singles, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin will look to continue his strong run when he faces China’s world No 14, Lu Guang Zu, for a place in the quarter-finals.
Aidil, ranked world No 48, pulled off a major upset yesterday by defeating China’s world No 32 Wang Zheng Xing 21-12, 19-21, 21-18. The one-hour match marked Aidil’s first time advancing to the second round of a World Tour Super 500 event.
The 24-year-old has shown encouraging form this season, having won the Sri Lanka International Challenge in March and reaching the semi-finals of the Ruichang Masters in China.
