PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia’s rising stars in women’s badminton, Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, created history by reaching their first World Tour final at the China Masters today.

The young pair who caused a stir at the recently concluded Uber Cup in Denmark by defeating higher-ranked pairs, beat the new home pair Wang Yi Duo-Wang Zi Men in the semi-final at the Baoji City Gymnasium.

The Malaysians, ranked world No 131, defeated their fifth-seeded rivals 21-19, 21-18 in 42 minutes to confirm their place in the Super 100 final. The championships are the lowest tier in the World Tour.

En route to the final, Zi Yu, 16, and Noraqilah, 19, defeated two other Chinese pairs and a Japanese duo.

They came into the spotlight at the Uber Cup with their giant-killing feat against Japan, defeating world No 7 pair Rin Iwanaga-Kei Nakanishi.

Zi Yu-Noraqilah will face Japan’s world No 185 pair Sumire Nakade-Miyi Takahashi, who won the Orleans Masters title in March, in the final.
