PETALING JAYA:
Three Malaysian mixed doubles pairs cruised into the second round of the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) with comfortable wins in their opening matches today.

Reigning world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei eased past their lower-ranked Japanese opponents Haruki Kawabe-Kokona Ishikawa 21-10, 21-19 in 36 minutes at the Olympic Sports Centre in Ningbo, China.

The world No 4 pair will face the winners of the match between Thailand’s Phuwanat Horbanluekit-Benyapa Aimsaard and India’s Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto on Thursday.

Malaysia’s second pair, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai, overcame India’s Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Shivani Gadde in straight games.

The world No 11 pair took 34 minutes to win 21-13, 21-19 against the 39th-ranked Indians. They will meet Taiwan’s Chen Cheng Kuan-Hsu Yin Hui, ranked No 27 in the world, in the last-16.

Malaysia’s world No 34 pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien defeated India’s Ashith Surya-Amrutha Pramuthesh 21-16, 21-15 in 31 minutes. They will face either China’s Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui or Taiwan’s Wu Guan Xun-Lee Chia Hsin in the next round.

Separately, Malaysia’s junior women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan cleared both qualifying rounds to book a place in the main draw.

Noraqilah, 19, and Zi Yu, 15, last year’s World Junior Championships silver medallists, secured straight-game victories over Macau’s Ng Weng Chi-Pui Chi Wa 21-11, 21-10 and Thailand’s Phattharin Aiamvareesrisakul-Sarisa Janpeng, winning 21-9, 21-13.

However, the world No 216 Malaysian pair face a tough opening round in the main draw against Taiwan’s world No 8 duo Hsieh Pei Shan-Hung En Tzu.
