When it comes to Chinese Tai Chao restaurants, you often find rather conventional names that involve someone’s family surname or place of origin.
XFrens Cafe and Restaurant though is different. You would be forgiven if you thought they served good pastries and warm pies but no, the menu couldn’t be more different.

XFrens is located in Subang Jaya SS18, together with a number of other busy shops along the same row of shophouses.
There is ample space to park but to be on the safe side, get there early as the crowds swell during the weekends at dinnertime.
If you’re there at around 6.30pm or 6.45pm, you should get a table immediately.
The menu at Xfrens is pretty comprehensive – there’s a good selection of chicken dishes as well as seafood, vegetables, tofu and much more.
The Siong Thong Lala that was brought to the table was pretty good. The gravy was spicy and just the thing to whet the appetite. The shellfish was of a decent size and freshness too – always a plus.
Pumpkin Tofu is among the signature dishes of Xfrens, and one that provided a nice contrast to the others on the table in terms of texture and taste. It was crispy on the outside but soft within with a good, thick and tasty gravy.
The Paku with Chili Padi was superb, so definitely order this dish when you come here.

The Garlic Pork is another must-order at Xfrens. This dish is basically deep-fried pork, stir-fried with loads of garlic. It was as simple as it was tasty, and the combination of pork and garlic was an assault on the senses – but in the best way possible.
The Teow Chew-style Steamed Red Snapper was very well prepared, with ingredients you’d expect from a typical Teow Chew dish of this kind – tomato, tofu, salted vegetables, garlic, ginger, cilantro, and chilli.
The dinner in total was around RM40 per person inclusive of drinks – a rather fair price considering there was good quality fish as well as lala. Definitely a restaurant to re-visit in the near future.
