PETALING JAYA:
Living with Parkinson’s disease is tough and living alone with it is tougher. This is the plight of 75-year-old RD Selva, a former sports writer and editor.

Last week, Selva was the talk of social media when he collapsed in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and was found in a dazed and confused state by Jezemine Lim, wife of comedian Harith Iskander.

After some difficulty, they managed to take him home. Over the weekend, they paid him a visit to check on him, bringing him an appetising breakfast of thosai, ‘sambar’ and chutney and then spending time with him during their “Jalan-jalan Cari Makan Dan Barang” session at 1 Utama Shopping Centre.

“Uncle Selva is much stronger since the fall and we were able to walk around One U. We even bought him a new smartphone since he lost his during the fall,” said Jezemine.

As much as this outing made Selva’s day, Jezemine said that he pined to spend such moments with his late Filipina wife.

Noticing his need for companionship, she is now inspired to establish an elderly support system for seniors who are on their own.

Jezemine and Harith have also taken the responsibility to help Selva with his debts.

“We are planning to settle his six months’ rent debt and pay an additional six months’ rent to maintain a roof over his head. We will also cover his expenses for medication to treat his Parkinson’s, diabetes and hypertension, and hire a caretaker to oversee Uncle Selva’s health and safety,” she said.

Jezemine and Harith said the total cost to support Selva is estimated at RM35,000 and they hope the community will be able to extend a helping hand too.

Donations can be made directly to Maybank account 564892140932 with the reference “Uncle Selva”.
