KUALA LUMPUR:
Looking for cute handmade crocheted toys, artisanal scented candles, whimsy greeting cards, T-shirts and jumpers with cool prints, or even organic oils and pickles? Head on over to Snackfood in Centrio Pantai Hillpark here and you’ll find these novelties and more!

The brainchild of Adeline Chong and Khoo Wei Yeng, Snackfood’s offerings are carefully curated to evoke joy and curiosity – true to its signature tagline, “Collector of Happy Things”.

“We promote the idea of enjoying small things for a longer time. All our products are purposefully selected, most of them made by artisans in small batches,” Chong told FMT Lifestyle.

“I’d like you to walk in and be surprised, and to walk out feeling delighted.”

This bright and inviting boutique is filled with charming, eclectic items waiting to be discovered. Far from your regular trinket store, what sets Snackfood apart from traditional retailers is Chong’s goal to offer a personalised and memorable experience.

To that end, “we create a calm, comfortable environment with our signature scent and music playlist to encourage customers to spend more time here”, she added.

Snackfood is the result of Chong’s love for collectibles, a passion fuelled by her fondness for history and “grandmother stories”. Some of her treasured childhood hauls included Enid Blyton books, soft toys, and boxes of stickers.

This interest has taken her from the back lanes of old neighbourhoods such as Pudu, Petaling Street and PJ Old Town to far-flung locations like Paris and Berlin in search of unique items that told a story.

Over time, her acquisitions expanded to include vintage suitcases, old military Russian and China badges, rare books and cinema posters, toys, record players, and “tacky” souvenirs from people’s vacations and events.

In 2013, inspired by her family and friends who liked the items in her personal collection, Chong took a sabbatical from the corporate world to open a small, vintage-collectibles store. Located in Bangsar, this was the first iteration of Snackfood.

Eventually, lifestyle products such as scents, artworks, fashion and independent publications were added to the inventory. Snackfood moved to its current location in 2021, following a brief closure during the pandemic.

Chong’s proudest selections are the carefully curated books for kids. “My 11-year-old daughter Jade is my inspiration. I select books that reflect her views and curiosities,” she shared.

As for the future, Snackfood’s horizons are expanding: Chong revealed that a second outlet will open at KLoe Hotel on Jalan Bukit Bintang next month.

She is also looking forward to working with local artists and designers on new products, in addition to partnering with overseas stores to co-present retail exhibitions.

Ultimately, whether you’re drawn to vintage curiosities or artisanal offerings, Snackfood promises to surprise and delight, one happy thing at a time.
