With the aroma attracting coffee aficionados from all over, the Kluang Coffee Powder Factory on Jalan Besar here is recognised as one of the state’s key tourism producers.
The facility produces 6,000kg of coffee daily, supplying over 400 coffee shops in Kluang and 1,000 businesses nationwide. Kluang Coffee Cap Televisyen is available in powder, sachet and whole-bean varieties.
Third-generation owner Goh Yong Kian, the factory’s general manager, told Bernama that the brand had been founded by his grandfather, Goh Tong Tor, in Batu Tiga in 1966.
“It started with just a wooden factory as a means of making income,” he said, adding that the family business moved to its current larger and more modern premises in 2002 to meet growing demand.
Asked about the brand name, Goh explained that his grandfather had coined “Cap Televisyen” after buying himself a TV set, which was then in black-and-white and considered a luxury item.
“When the TV was on, children and senior citizens of all races would gather at my grandfather’s house to watch programmes,” he said.

“These fond memories inspired my grandfather to name his coffee ‘Cap Televisyen’, hoping the business would flourish and become as popular as his TV, which attracted people to his home and strengthened friendships within the community.”
According to Goh, the coffee is made from a blend of three types of coffee beans: liberica from Chamek here, robusta from Indonesia, and arabica from Brazil.
“When these are roasted together with margarine and sugar, they create a distinctive flavour that is strong, rich and aromatic,” he noted.
Unlike other brands that use butter, margarine is used so vegetarians can also enjoy their products. This, Goh added, is why their coffee has garnered a loyal following, which included the late Sultan Iskandar, the fourth sultan of Johor.
Indeed, the rich flavours of Cap Televisyen attracts coffee lovers from throughout the country as well as visitors from Singapore, who make their way across the causeway just for a cup.
