KLANG:
The city of Klang is known for good food, from bak kut teh to chicken rice, pork ribs, and banana leaf rice. But if you’re craving for something totally different, make a bee line for Medan Selera Taman Eng Ann.

Despite its simple set-up, here, one can find a variety of scrumptious offerings such as char kuey teow, rojak, cendol, chee cheong fun and yong tau foo – all under one roof!

One of the highlights here is Tan Kee Poh Piah. The stall is run by Tan Cheah Kuan and his son Jim Tan, who are second- and third-generation popiah makers.

“My grandfather started selling popiah in Klang in 1969,” Jim, 34, told FMT Lifestyle. Some Klang residents may remember him serving these spring rolls from his motorbike in Taman Teluk Pulai.

Cheah Kuan, 67, who started the stall in the hawker centre over two decades ago, still uses the recipe that he inherited from his father, even making the spring roll wrappers from scratch every single day.

In fact, when celebrity Chinese-American chef Martin Yan visited his stall several years ago, Cheah Kuan was happy to show Yan how these wrappers were made.

So, what’s the verdict? Each spring roll comes with a generous amount of flavourful “sengkuang” or jicama as well as shredded cucumber and tofu.

The wrapper is delightfully soft, fresh and slightly chewy, while the slices of Chinese pork sausages add a sweet and smoky flavour to the spring rolls. But the star of this show is the crunchy pork lard sprinkled atop the filling inside, which delivers a depth of flavour.

Given how delicious these spring rolls are, it was not surprising when the duo revealed that customers who have moved from Klang often make the trip back to the stall during the weekends for their popiah fix.

To quench your thirst, Cheah Kuan’s wife, Chong Ai Lay, makes refreshing bowls of leng chee kang. The sweet soup comes with a generous amount of barley, sago pearls, winter melon strips, kidney beans and longan – absolutely perfect on a scorching day!

If you want something else to enjoy your popiah and leng chee kang with, the hawker centre is also home to “Aunty Angie’s Goreng Pisang Corner.” Here you’ll find hot and crispy banana fritters, prawn fritters and kuih bakul or nian gao (sweet and sticky rice cake) – simply delicious!

Overall, this is a great meal if you want something light for lunch, or a tea time snack to keep you going until dinner.
