KUALA LUMPUR:
Most people brush their teeth every day without giving it much thought. But according to oral care experts, clean teeth alone may not be enough to maintain long-term oral health.

This World Gum Health Day 2026, Systema is urging Malaysians to pay closer attention to their gums through its “Expert Care, Every Day” campaign.

The initiative is aimed at raising awareness about the early signs of gum problems and the importance of expert-backed daily care.

While gum issues are common, they are often overlooked or misunderstood. Many people assume bleeding gums are caused by brushing too hard, when in reality they may signal inflammation linked to bacteria building up along the gumline.

“We’ve observed that many Malaysians prioritise clean teeth but often underestimate the importance of gum health,” said Tomotaka Oka, managing director of Southern Lion Sdn Bhd.

“With ‘Expert Care, Every Day’, Systema is championing a more informed approach to oral care – one that focuses on prevention, early signs, and expert-backed solutions.”

According to Oka, gum problems can develop quietly over time, which is why early intervention matters.

“Too often, oral care focuses only on clean teeth, when gum health is what sustains long-term oral wellness,” he explained.

“At Systema, we advocate a shift towards early intervention and expert-backed daily care. Recognising early signs such as bleeding gums is key to maintaining better gum health.”

The campaign also aims to encourage Malaysians to move beyond a teeth-centric approach to oral care and recognise the role healthy gums play in everyday well-being.

This includes simple daily functions many people take for granted, such as eating comfortably, speaking clearly, and smiling with confidence.

Systema also highlights that effective gum care is not just about toothpaste, but also about using the right tools.

The gumline is often difficult to reach during brushing, especially with toothbrushes not designed for precision cleaning. Features such as slimmer heads, flexible necks and finer bristles can help improve access to these areas.

Systema’s SlimTech technology is designed to support deeper cleaning along the gumline, and help remove plaque and food debris more effectively, including from hard-to-reach areas at the back of the teeth.

As part of the campaign, Systema will host a series of public roadshows in Kuala Lumpur featuring interactive activities and educational experiences focused on gum health.

Visitors can also enjoy complimentary gum health assessments conducted by dentists in collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Periodontology.

The campaign is further supported by a digital video series featuring dental practitioners addressing common gum misconceptions, and highlighting the often “silent” nature of gum disease.

In addition, Systema has introduced a revamped portal where users can assess their gum health and access practical tips and tools to improve their daily oral care routine.

With better awareness and the best daily care offered by Systema, you can be assured of healthier gums and brighter smiles.
