PETALING JAYA:
It goes without saying that the Covid-19 pandemic has left many of Malaysia’s industries in the lurch, with the food and beverage industry being among the worst affected.

But even with all the difficulties that they are facing, many restaurants are still stepping up to the task of helping their fellow Malaysians in need.

Among these restaurants with hearts of gold is Tetangga Kita, an Indonesian eatery specialising in martabak in all its varied renditions.

Back in December 2020, the eatery launched a special limited-edition series of martabak boxes called “Makasih Ya Frontliners”.

This is part of a three-month long campaign that will end in February 2021.

Founded in 2018, Tetangga Kita sells an assortment of Indonesian-style martabaks, such as this Chicken Mozzarella Martabak. (Tetangga Kita pic)

Throughout this campaign, customers ordering from Tetangga Kita will be receiving their food in the restaurant’s new packaging which bears the message, “To all our frontliners, Makasih Ya”.

More importantly, a percentage of the proceeds earned from the sale of these boxes will be donated to The Hope Branch, a Malaysian NGO.

Founded by Malaysian entertainment personality, Harith Iskander and his wife, Dr Jezamine Lim, The Hope Branch is raising funds for the underprivileged struggling to cope during the pandemic.

In particular, the NGO provides food and grocery aid to vulnerable families, single parents, the disabled and those living below the poverty line.

In addition to conventional fillings, Tetangga Kita also offers rather unheard of but intriguing alternatives such as Samyang Martabak. (Tetangga Kita pic)

Speaking to FMT about their CSR initiative, the founders of Tetangga Kita, Rizky Sati and Amirah Che Azizuddin, said that this was their way of giving back to the community during these difficult times.

“We believe that this contribution from us will benefit those who are truly struggling right now,” said Rizky.

As it happens, “Tetangga Kita” which means, “Our Neighbour” in Malay exemplifies the values that drive this charitable move by the eatery.

“We have always aspired to build a brand that brings people together as evident in the name itself,” said Rizky.

He added that giving back to the community was Tetangga Kita’s way of thanking all their loyal customers whose support was vital to the success of the eatery.

Rizky said that although the latest movement control order meant that dine-ins were no longer possible, Tetangga Kita was still able to send out its tasty martabak thanks to delivery services.

“We have experienced our fair share of hiccups here and there but we are extremely grateful for all our customers who have consistently supported us through their orders,” said Rizky.

“We are also very thankful to our workers, delivery partners and all riders, who do their best to get the martabak delivered to our customers.”

But what makes Tetangga Kita’s Indonesian-style martabaks stand out from the standard martabak you can get from any Mamak restaurant?

Apparently, Indonesian martabaks are not necessarily savoury as they can also come in sweet alternatives.

In turn, sweet martabak can also either be served with a thin, crispy crust or a thick, doughier layer.

In addition to the conventional fillings of chicken and beef, Tetangga Kita also offers more out-of-the-box fillings such as Samyang, Dendeng and Tuna.

So, what can you do if you wish to support the campaign and add to the proceeds going to charity?

Simple. Order yourself a tasty martabak from Tetangga Kita today and savour every bite in the safety of your home.

As Rizky put it, “Indulge in Tetangga Kita’s martabaks while being a part of a good cause!”
