Depression remains with MH370 families

Many say the search for the missing plane must continue beyond June.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Depression was still very much in evidence among the relatives of MH370’s passengers and crew as they gathered for the “Day of Remembrance” at the Publika mall in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The search in the Indian Ocean for the missing plane is due to end in June, but many of the relatives said it must go on, especially now that a possible piece of wreckage has been found in Mozambique.

Zainab Mohd Ariffin, whose son Mohd Hazrin Hasnan was among the 12 crew members on board, said the government must not give up its search efforts although it’s been two years since Flight MH370 vanished.

“The government must be responsible,” she said. “They said the flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean and they must prove it.

“A big plane like that wouldn’t have landed without any evidence.”

She acknowledged that the government had made some efforts to find the plane, but said she didn’t think it had done enough. “There are no results,” she pointed out.

However, she remained hopeful that there would one day be answers to explain what happened to the plane and those on board.

“I’m sure God will give us the answers one day,” she said.

Mohd Hazrin’s 27-year-old sister, Syafinaz, said some members of her family had decided to move on although they were still grieving.

“It’s depressing to hold on to something of which you are not sure,” she said. “So we decided to just let it go and move on. What’s the point of hoping for something that’s not there?”

Another person who said the government must not stop the search was Zamani Zakaria, the father of Mohammad Razahan, who was on board the flight with his newly wed, Norli Akmar Hamid. They were going to Beijing for their honeymoon.

“My wife still believes that our son is still alive,” Zamani said.

“I hope the government will continue with the search. It does not matter if they live or die, but knowing the truth will at least give us some peace of mind.”
