The keys of the vintage Mini were given to Andrew’s daughter Maira Elizabeth Nari during the “Day of Remembrance” gathering for MH370 families yesterday.
Maira said the car had been with her family for nearly 13 years and it brought back her fondest memories of her father.
“I used to sit in his lap and turn the steering wheel when I was younger.” he said. “He used to pick me up from school with that car.
“He loved Minis. This was the car that he used to drive around everywhere before we got the Myvi.”
Maira said Sin Tong Bee Auto’s owner, whom she referred to only as “William,” contacted her last year and offered to fix the car for free.
“That car was broken for so many years, but my dad didn’t have the chance to fix it,” she said. “So they decided to make it as a gift.”
Asked if she would drive the car to the college where she’s studying, she said, “No. We’ll drive it around our housing area. That’s it.”
According to her, the family wants to preserve the car for as long as possible.
As news emerged that a piece of MH370 wreckage might have been found in Mozambique, Maira said she was wishing the authorities would not stop the search until the plane’s disappearance could be fully explained.
She said she was doing her best to remain positive. “I’m good. I don’t really like to think about it because it will make me feel negative. Deep down in my heart, though, I still hope that the search goes on.”
