KUCHING:
DAP today officially announced 10 candidates who will contest in the May 7 state election for the southern part of Sarawak.

At the DAP mobilisation event held at the party’s headquarters here tonight, Sarawak DAP Chairman Chong Chien Jen introduced the 10 candidates in the presence of some 100 supporters.

The 10 are Chong himself for the Kota Sentosa seat, Mordi Bimol (Tasik Biru), Wong Kin Wei (Padungan), Violet Yong (Pending), Christina Chew Wang See (Batu Kawah), Abdul Aziz Isa (Stakan), Sanjan Daik (Mambong), Andrew Edward Luak (Bukit Semuja), Andrew Nyaie (Kedup) and Leon Jimat (Simanggang).

These candidates are made up of four incumbents (Kota Sentosa, Padungan, Pending, Batu Kawah), three new faces (Kedup, Mambong and Stakan) and three others who had previously stood for election (Tasik Biru, Simanggang and Bukit Semuja).

Bukit Semuja is one of the 11 newly introduced seats after the redelineation exercise conducted by the Election Commission (EC) last year.

Present at the event tonight were DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng and Chong’s father, who is also Sarawak DAP founder Chong Siew Chiang.

Earlier, Lim visited Meradong, Padungan, Serian and Bau to observe the party’s election machinery before the campaign officially starts on April 25.

At a press conference earlier, Chong stated that DAP would contest in 29 seats; 14 of them in predominantly-Chinese areas, 14 in Dayak-majority areas and one in a Malay-majority area.
