DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang slammed the grassroots leader for his “gutter language” during a ceramah, which was broadcast by Skype to DAP supporters for the Sarawak state election last week.
In a report by Malaysiakini, Lim criticised the vulgar and crude language Hew used to urge voters to back Batu Kitang DAP candidate Abdul Aziz Isa.
“The language, which he used against the corrupt, regardless of race, is crude, vulgar and insensitive which I do not approve of,” said Lim.
“Hew should rise above such ‘gutter’ language and stop such crude and vulgar lingo.”
However, as a saving grace, the DAP supremo said Hew’s remarks could not be considered as racist.
Lim declined to say if action would be taken against Hew for his speech.
The video of the speech saw Hew calling for Aziz’s election to the state assembly so that he could “screw the Malays, the big corrupt politicians, screw pok kai Parti Bersatu Bumiputera (PBB)”.
Hew had accused Umno cybertroopers of distorting the subtitles for his Mandarin speech to make him look like a racist.
Hew said he had nowhere in his speech asked Sarawak Chinese voters to vote for Abdul Aziz to “screw” the Malays.
He said he was only referring to the “corrupt” PBB (Sarawak’s anchor party) and not the Malays.
“Umno cybertroopers had purposely twisted my speech in Mandarin in the video on YouTube, with incorrect subtitles. They switched ‘PBB’ with ‘Malays’.”
Earlier, Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari had also asked Hew to be careful when giving speeches.
He said although he understood the message Hew was trying to get across, he did not agree with how the DAP leader conveyed it.
“Although he was definitely not trying to say that Aziz would screw all Malays, I also think he should exercise better wisdom in articulating his thoughts.
“I hope all our leaders will exercise greater judgment in their future statements, especially in this technological age.”
Hew is popularly known as “Superman” for his penchant for wearing attire depicting the superhero.
