Speaking to FMT, Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari said while he understood the message Hew was trying to get across, he said he did not agree with how the DAP firebrand conveyed it.
“Although he was definitely not trying to say that Aziz would screw all Malays, I also think he should exercise better wisdom in articulating his thoughts.
“I hope all our leaders will exercise greater judgment in their future statements, especially in this technological age.”
Hew, popularly known as “Superman” for his penchant in wearing attire depicting the iconic superhero, drew flak after a video of him delivering a speech, deemed to be racist, made the rounds on cyberspace.
In the video, the DAP firebrand is seen addressing a ceramah in Mandarin. It was broadcast over Skype for the benefit of Sarawak voters.
The subtitles, however, quoted him as urging voters to back Aziz, the Batu Kitang DAP candidate, so he could “screw the Malays”.
Hew has since denied he ever uttered such words and blamed Umno cybertroopers for distorting the subtitles of the speech to make him look like a racist. He also claimed the cybertroopers had substituted “PBB” with “Malays”.
Aziz also leapt to Hew’s defence, claiming that the speech was misinterpreted and clarified that Hew wanted him to take “corrupt Malay leaders” to task.
“He didn’t say that I will screw the Malays. He said I will screw corrupt Malay leaders.
“They (BN supporters) made it viral for the sake of publicity, to cover up the issues of 1MDB, GST (goods and services tax) and to play up the racial sentiments in the run-up to the upcoming by-elections,” he said when contacted.
Excerpts of Hew’s statement were made public by one “Lim Sian See” on Facebook.
It was followed by Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who further publicised the matter by publishing an article entitled, “Vote DAP so that we can screw the Malays”.
