The Star Online reported Magistrate Mohamad Ibrahim Mohamad Ghulam of the Kampar magistrate’s court saying that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie against the 29-year-old Indian national.
Following his acquittal, Selvam thanked his lawyer Baljit Singh, who took his case pro bono, and Parti Cinta Malaysia vice-president Huan Cheng Guan, who had sheltered him for the past two years.
“I feel good. I am very happy to be going back to see my family,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal. He however, refused to comment when asked if he had anything to say to Karpal’s family.
Selvam was charged under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act and could have been jailed for two years, and fined up to RM20,000 if convicted.
The vehicle Selvam drove had on April 17, 2014, collided with a lorry on the North-South Expressway near Kampar past midnight, resulting in the death of Karpal and his aide Michael Cornelius.
