Barisan Nasional (BN) Secretary-General Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the Opposition pact should be more sensitive and not act in haste as this would send a negative message and perception of Malaysia to other countries.
“It was clear that Datuk Seri Najib was not named as defendant or alleged to have committed any criminal wrongdoing in the United States Department of Justice lawsuits with regard to 1MDB assets.
“What else didn’t they (Opposition parties) understand? Besides calling for Najib’s resignation, don’t they have any other topic to talk about?” he told Bernama here today when asked to comment on the Opposition’s call for Najib to step down as prime minister following the lawsuits.
He said Najib knew what his responsibilities were and had been doing his best for the country.
“As proof, he (Najib) has been keeping an open mind and said that the government would give full cooperation to all international investigation bodies,” he said.
Meanwhile, Umno Puteri chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin also rapped the Opposition’s double standard of turning a blind eye when many quarters demanded Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also DAP secretary-general, resign following the corruption charges he was facing.
“When Lim was charged with corruption, the Opposition pretended like nothing happened … even Lim didn’t resign. So why should they demand for the prime minister’s resignation now?
“It was clear that Lim was charged in court, but Najib was not even named in the lawsuits,” she said.
As a lawyer, Mas Ermieyati said as all eyes were on Malaysia right now, the people should stay united and strengthen their solidarity so as not to fall for the Opposition’s lies and ideas to topple the leaders who were democratically elected by the people.
Umno Supreme Council member Ab Aziz Kaprawi, said there was no need for an independent tribunal to be set up to investigate the allegations involving 1MDB as proposed by former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said this was because the country already had a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to investigate the allegations.
“No need to set up a tribunal … we already have the PAC and its committee also comprised the Opposition representatives … even the PAC Vice-Chairman Tan Seng Giaw of DAP had also said Najib was not involved directly in the 1MDB issues,” he said.
Ab Aziz also expressed hope that the public would not fall for the lies spread by the Opposition, but instead stand strong behind their elected leader.
