Diving duo hailed on social media


PETALING JAYA: Malaysian netizens and public figures have congratulated divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hong for winning Malaysia’s first medal at the Rio Olympics.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, through his Twitter account early today, congratulated the girls for grabbing the first medal for Malaysia.

“congrats Pandelela Jun Hoong, @Pandelela_R So proud of you and Jun Hoong, Lela. What a performance. Malaysia Boleh!” he tweeted.

Prime Minister Najib Razak also congratulated them on his Twitter account.

“The nation’s first medal! Proud of the success of @Pandelela_R and Cheong Jun Hoong! Congratulations! #Rio2016 #MAS #Olympics”.

Pandelela and Cheong won the silver medal in the 10m synchronised platform event today.

The duo, paired for the third time in international championships, accumulated 344.34 points behind China’s Chen Ruolin and Liu Huxia, who collected 354 points.

Canadians Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion won the bronze medal with 336.18 points.

Sportsman and track cyclist Azizulhasni Azwang, on his Instagram, also expressed his joy at the feat of Pandelela and Cheong.

“Congratulations to Pandelela & Jun Hong for the silver medal and the first medal for our country. So proud of your achievement. #MalaysiaBoleh #KamiTeamMalaysia #TeamMalaysiaOlympics #teammsia”

On Twitter, user Arsenio Oribio Jr ‏(@Ar_Oribio) said both girls should be given a “Datukship” for their silver medal win.

“Datuk Pandelela Rinong & Datuk Cheong Jun Hoong, sounds nice!!! Well, after they won the silver medals, they should get that title. #Rio2016”.

Another user, Naqiuddin Nazrin ‏@naqiuddinazrin said it was worth staying up at night to watch the live telecast.

“Tak sia-sia berjaga sampai lewat pagi . Tahniah Pandelela Rinong dan Jun Hoong krn menyumbang pingat perak untuk Malaysia #Olympics #Rio2016 (It was worth staying up until the morning. Congratulations to Pandelela Rinong and Jun Hoong on your contribution of a silver medal at the #Olympics #Rio2016)”.

Pandelela’s fans also commented on her Facebook post when she announced the news.

User Azman Halim Zainal congratulated the duo and expressed a desire to meet them and “shake their hands”.

Another user, Mohd Faisal Jaafar, said he hoped they could win more medals in other events.

The 2016 Rio Olympics began last Friday and will end on Aug 21.
