IPOH:
Police have confirmed receiving a report pertaining to alleged sexual abuse at a maahad tahfiz (school to study or memorise al-Quran) here, which is owned by a prominent independent speaker.

State Police Chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi said to date, police had recorded statements from 10 people, including students, complainants and school authorities.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the state-level “Fly the Jalur Gemilang” programme here today.

In a WhatsApp message that went viral recently, some new students of the maahad tahfiz were alleged to have been molested.

Meanwhile, Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk) Director Mohd Yusop Husin said the department visited the maahad tahfiz a few days ago and interviewed several students.

He said although the school was registered with the JAIPk, administrative matters, including student intake, was run entirely by the maahad tahfiz because it was a private institution.
