Called in as a witness, Masjaliza’s statement was recorded at the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman this afternoon.

Masjaliza later told reporters that it was a brief session and that all questions were related to Bersih 2.0, its accounts and links to George Soros, referring to the Open Society Foundations (OSF).

“I did not answer any question,” she said, adding that she was simply exercising her rights under Section 122(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Masjaliza was accompanied by Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah who urged the authorities to stop harassing NGOs.

“It’s not just about Bersih but all our endorsing organisations who are being harassed for no reason.

“There’s nothing wrong in receiving foreign funding. It’s all for building democracy and for work related to human rights.”

Maria reminded that the role of a NGO is to serve as check and balance of the government.

She was arrested last year a day before the Bersih 5 on Nov 17 and held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012. She was investigated for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy in Malaysia, an offence under Section 124(c) of the Penal Code.

Similarly, former Bersih 2.0 chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan was also called in for questioning on Dec 8 over the same matter. She is also being investigated under Section 124 (c) of the Penal Code.
